The popularity of Thai food stems largely from the variety and intensity of its flavours, but the properties and ingredients used, along with its method of cooking, means that Thai cuisine is also seen as incredibly healthy too.

Common ingredients in Thai dishes, such as tofu, seafood, and bean sprouts, also boast impressive nutritional profiles.

And if that wasn’t enough, Thai meals also tend to feature a variety of non-starchy vegetables that provide fibre, vitamins, and minerals.

Healthy Ingredients

Much of this has been put down to the natural ingredients used to prepare traditional Thai dishes – many of which have been used to treat numerous ailments for thousands of years.

Thai food is known for its emphasis on herbs and spices, many of which have been studied for their benefits.

Here are just three key ingredients that can be found in Thai meals that are also considered to offer natural remedies.

Turmeric

Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is known as an anti-inflammatory agent, helping to relieve allergy symptoms as well as arthritis – or any condition caused by excess inflammation.

Galangal

This relative of ginger has many of the same health benefits, most notably its ability to aid with digestion.

Coriander

Containing phosphorus, calcium, potassium, carotene, and niacin Coriander can help to improve blood sugar levels, boosting immunity, improving heart health, promoting digestion and improving kidney functioning.

Preparation & Cooking

It’s not just what goes into Thai food that makes the dishes healthier, it’s also the way the food is cooked.

Thai food is cooked quickly on a high heat in order to retain as much of the goodness and flavour – meaning that very little oil is used in the cooking of stir-fried dishes particularly.

A little oil is added to the wok at the beginning and then a broth is added to ensure the dish does not dry out – but that’s about it.

So as it’s cooked with significantly fewer oils, and its ingredients are fresher, Thai food offers a crisper, lighter flavour which is not as heavy as some Asian dishes.

Balanced Diet

Thai meals often feature a good balance of macronutrients such as protein, fats, and carbohydrates – which all bring their own natural health benefits.

Meanwhile, Curries, stir-fries, and soups are made with a variety of vegetables, include a protein source like tofu, lean meat, or seafood, and contain coconut milk, peanut sauces, or other fat.

If that wasn’t enough, some of the most commonly used vegetables in Thai meals are often non-starchy, such as peppers, tomato, cabbage, broccoli, carrots, and onions.

These are also packed with fibre, vitamins, minerals, and a variety of compounds that contribute to good digestion and overall health.
